Activity Goal:

Do you want to take the first step in becoming a model aircraft remote control (R/C) pilot?  This is a step in the right direction. Are you already flying R/C and want to become a better R?C pilot? We will be flying tricycle landing gear and taildragger type aircraft as well as powered gliders.

Aspiring R/C pilots will receive formal AMA ground instruction and will fly with an AMA flight instructor/pilot. Through the use of buddy-boxes and hobby industry recognized basic and intermediate level model aircraft, you will learn from the best instructors. Many cadets will not only solo, but move on to complete higher levels of competency at this academy! Once you can show you are competency flying the tricycle gear training aircraft, we will have several low-wing taildragger aircraft for you, so you can experience the differences.

The learning environment is specially designed for cadets, and the low instructor to student ratio of 6:1, provides opportunities for mentoring and individual attention. Participants in the Model Aircraft & Remote Control (MARC) Flight Academy will receive over 4 solid-hours of “hands on” flight time learning the basics of flying an electric model aircraft, 4-hours of ground instruction and up to 6-hours R/C flight simulator training. When not flying at the flying field, time is spent repairing damaged aircraft, charging batteries and supervising cadets.

We recommend you have a current Academy Model Aeronautics (AMA) membership card prior to attending the MARC flight academy. Youth membership cards are free on the AMA Education website, and it takes about 2 weeks to receive your card after registration. This is not an encampment, but we will wear ABU uniforms, have morning formations, and pay strict attention to customs/courtesies and the Cadet Protection Program.
